STARS Celebration
The STARS Celebration is the annual gathering of the Corps that is a Call to Action to broaden participation in computing by advancing yourself and advancing others. The conference celebrates prior year successes while inducting new students and faculty into the STARS Computing Corps. The Celebration has a unique focus on developing cohorts comprised of returning and new Corps students and faculty mentors from the same institution; however, with the effort to promote the national adoption of student-led regional engagement, the Celebration welcomes individual participants as well. Furthermore, the STARS Celebration has become a convener for many synergistic BPC organizations such as EL Alliance, CAHSI, A4RC, AccessComputing Alliance, and CRA-W with over 1000 participants and partners since 2006. As convener, it serves as a national network to demonstrate and scale practices.
During the Celebration, the Corps is called to action to recruit, develop and become the next generation of computing professionals. Through participation in poster sessions and presentations focused on Engagement, Leadership, Technology, Corps Practices, Research, and Computing Education, students are inspired to undertake leadership projects. Corps participants reflect on new ideas, collaborate, and plan their upcoming academic year leadership projects such as: Outreach to pre-college students to inform and excite kids about computing; College outreach to support and advance college students; Community service to use computing skills to serve society; and Research Experiences and Internships to advance innovation and to serve by improving one’s own expertise in computing. Celebration also advances faculty and future faculty by providing career mentoring sessions and workshops as well as opportunities for research collaboration and networking.
