"Being an African American male I know how it feels to be in an atmosphere where you feel like there is no one that understands where you're coming from but in IT I have never felt like that once."

Born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida growing up I was always into computer technology. My goal straight out of high school was to go to college and get into a major dealing with computers, so I started college majoring in Computer Science. From my experience in the Computer Science major it was an intense concentration on programming. I looked into the career aspect of programming and I came to the conclusion that I would be sitting in front of a computer all day creating software and/or hardware. I stayed in the major for about a semester or two and realized computer programming was not the route I wanted to take in life in dealing with computers.

I wanted to actually communicate with the people who were using the software and/or hardware and implement solutions for them so I decided on majoring in Information Technology (IT). I have been majoring in IT ever since and I love every aspect of it. I am asked all the time "what is the difference between Computer Science and Information Technology?" I respond that Computer Science leads to the creation of a tool while IT puts all the tools to use. For example, the hammer and nails are tools but it takes some one to use those tools to build buildings. Based on my experience in IT and, what I believe most people also like most about the major, is that it is not linear and that you have control on what you would like to concentrate and gain most knowledge in whether its web-design, networking, or system management, and many other areas.

Derek StephensAnother incredible aspect of IT is its diversity. Being an African American male I know how it feels to be in an atmosphere where you feel like there is no one that understands where you're coming from but in IT I have never felt like that once. The need for IT is increasing at a national rate as other countries use of IT is increasing so fast that the United States must do the same in order to keep up with today's technology. Based on that alone IT is a good field to be in at this time; another positive thing is that a lot of employers in IT are striving for diversity so being a minority skilled in the IT field you can look forward to great job opportunities with a degree in this major.
