"...being 50 percent Mexican carries with it a certain stereotype... it is more important for me to work hard and provide something to show for my work."
My name is Scott Hernandez. I am currently a senior at Florida State University studying at the College of Information. I am also currently serving as a web development intern at the College of Information's iTec Services where I work on projects such as the College of Social Work website.
While enrolled in college, I have held jobs as a team manager for the FSU Men's Tennis Team, and a sales associate at Staples. I enjoy working and have tried many different jobs as a way to figure out what I want to do as a career. However, it is in web development that I have found my passion and with what I spend the majority of work time doing.
After working several different jobs, I started to realize that web development is what I would like to do for a living. Therefore, I enrolled as a student at the College of Information and began taking classes in Information Studies. I am excited at the idea of working in IT as a professional. One area in web development that I plan to focus on is that of working with small businesses. I enjoy the idea of giving a small business the capability to reach a worldwide audience.
However, being 50 percent Mexican carries with it a certain stereotype that is associated with most Mexicans in America. Because of this, I feel that it is more important for me to work hard and provide something to show for my work. It is for this reason that I try my best to always work hard towards landing a career in web development.
I have found that in web design, previous work that one has completed is a must if you plan to get a job creating a site. The customer doesn't necessarily want to know your credentials as much as they want to see what you have done and what you can do for them. Because of this, I strive to work hard at bulking up my portfolio and having something to show for myself. In doing this, I have found that it becomes easier and easier to get a new job creating a website for someone.
Recently I was hired to create a website for a local moving and storage company in Pensacola, Florida. In doing this site for this company, I now can once again enjoy giving this company the chance to broadcast their business to the entire world. It is this small feeling of satisfaction that draws me to web design and the desire to work in this field.
